An Indian Scientist and entrepreneur, Dr. Velumani inculcated his 38 years of experience in the field of diagnostics research and business to build Thyrocare out of nothing. His story is a story of creating an empire out of sheer grit and determination. A bonafide scientist and entrepreneur, he used his excellent understanding of thyroid biochemistry to build Thyrocare, a company valued above 3400 crores today. His prudence can be seen in the transition he made from mathematics to microbiology testing; now, COVID testing makes up for about two-fifths of Thyrocare turnover. After graduating in 1978, Velumani began with a job at Gemini Capsules, a small pharmaceutical company in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu as a shift chemist. He then worked at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) first as a laboratory assistant, staying for 14 years. During this time he pursued his Master's and Doctor's degree and rose to the rank of scientist.
