Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain

Biography

Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd.) is a highly respected Indian Army officer and strategic thinker with over four decades of experience in military operations, conflict management, and peacebuilding. A second-generation soldier, he has served in key operational areas including Jammu & Kashmir, Siachen, Sri Lanka, and UN missions in Africa. As General Officer Commanding XV Corps in Kashmir, he conceptualized the “Hearts Doctrine,” emphasizing people-centric counterinsurgency and civil-military integration.

Post-retirement, he continues to contribute to national policy as a member of India’s National Disaster Management Authority and has served as Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir. A prolific speaker and commentator, Lt. Gen. Hasnain writes and speaks on defense strategy, counterterrorism, and multi-domain security challenges.
